A beautiful film directed by Ji Yong Kim for Cosmopolitan Korea. If you were wondering why I chose to come to Korea... this is my justification. Need I say more?

An extensive fusion of American and European fashion labels, composed in a folk setting extracting all the amazing bold colours of Autumn. 

Note all the amazing knitwear layered with bold accessories, fur, and wovens.

See in the opening credits, the pink knit with a knot at the front. I could not get a clear screen shot of the piece, but I'm sure you all know which Im talking about. Creative knitwear at its best, add it with layers... a finished look of delight.

Loving this last look... the combination of aqua and red, in what seems to be, a bold fish rib. The texture has a contemporary finish and to complete the look, what better than fur, red fur.

A Drop of Colour... and Some Ink...

As I was on a lunch break at work, I watched my students selecting books to read from the school library. For what quickly caught my eye, was the beautiful illustrations these books had. Many of the books where international children's book translated into Hangul, however amongst the jumble of books, there was a grand selection of Korean children's books. The illustrations and colour is what stood out.

An array of different illustrating techniques from pencil drawing, ink, simulation, traditional Korean painting and calligraphy... this is just another thing to be mesmerized by.

 The Farting Daughter-in-law

Author- Shin Se Jeong

I wish i could tell you the stories behind these beautiful illustrations, however my Hangul is at slow reading stage with little, if not no understanding.

It was the colours and the use of traditional illustrative styles and calligraphy that drew me to this book. After researching the translation of the title... the illustrations made more sense. Apparently a traditional folk story.

I have snuck this book in, even though it isnt a Korean book by a Korean author, the illustrations were none the less, beautiful.

What caught my eye with this book was the use of wool simulated as red hair. Who would have guessed?... anything got to do with wool, my eyes widen!

The Worlds Most Precious Treasure, Me

Author- Nina Schnider 

From my research, and supported by the authors name; this is a German children's book translated in Hangul. I love the use of colours and the effectiveness of the red hair and its texture amongst the background.

One of my favorite finds, where a story can be told and felt just through its pictures. With use of cool and a hint of warm colours, illustrated with the delicacy of pencils. Even without having read it, I can sense the mythical and true resemblance to Korean folk history and culture.

Author- Lee Hyee Young

So much can be told through one illustration. The whole collaboration of colour,illustration and story brings a feeling of calmness, peace and a humble joy. These are illustrations I would frame and place on my wall.

Another one of my favorite finds, with similar reasons of the previous book, where the illustration tells the story. Also portraying the relation to Korean folk culture. From what I understood though the illustrations, portrays the purity and innocence of a child's heart. A child who carries her favorite yellow umbrella which she treasures, leaves her umbrella to cover a homeless old man who sleeps on the street. The story illustrates the reality of Korean life, which is ignored by society... but is seen by a child. Wow...

With the delicate use of pencil with a shaded soft use of colour, the illustration reveals the purity and gentleness of the heart.

With a bit of a contrast, this book was one of my fun finds. With the combination of pencil drawing, simulation and cutouts, a more contemporary feel and a jump from traditional Korean art to the modern. 

Cloud Bread

Author- Baek Hee Na 

What I found, was cute... You may not be able to tell through the photographs, but the illustration of the cats face is drawn on lined writing paper, cutout and simulated onto an illustrated background. Clothing items are also a simulation of fabrics as well as other objects within the picture. A beautifully illustrated book, which captures the art of storytelling and the creativity that goes with it. 

 From my recent exposure to these Korean books, which there were many and more to discover, I found it intriguing the depth, seriousness and reality of the stories told to Korean children. These of which im discussing are the traditional Korean folk tales. The themes seem to be quiet deep and mature for the age group of which these books are written for or told to. However in saying that, I can imagine these are the stories children treasure most when told by a grandparent and is passed on to generations for a lifetime.

From a Plastic Island Korean Catalogue Vol.7, my mind starting counting the looks I wish to parade this winter. Even though Plastic Island is an American brand... you can note the Korean styling that has gone into these looks.

In My Sweet Dream...

This can prove the extent of Korean styling; from a sweet fairytail like story we progress to a bold fairytale. I cant pick why, but the story somehow reminds me of Tim Burtons 'Alice in Wonderland'. Maybe it's the dramatic vibe portrayed by the use of colour and pattern embraced in the setting. Mental note "forest green and copper to be used in next range".

If there is a place where men dress better than women, I must say it's Korea. The array of knitwear for men is mesmerizing, further more, the styling is something that never ceases to astounds me.

Layering is whats done best. Not holding back from volume. Combining the best of colours and keeping it masculine. Finishing it off with a patterned feature piece. A great look. 

As I'm exploring the Korean styling, I lean myself towards developing my mens range further, without limitation to boldness and volume. These findings excite the possibilities of creation... and that's something to look forward to.

Knitwear Embraced

 As I gaze past shop window fronts... I am in awe of the extent of knitwear..... AMAZING knitwear!

Pattern, colour, texture, shape, volume..... Korea has it all!

I found this beautifully arranged window display in Myeong Dong, Seoul... amongst many other beautiful mouth drooling stores.... a shopaholics paradise.... or alternatively a nightmare! 

A collective arrangement, with an Autumn vintage theme and casual street wear. My favorite... the amazing fairisle leggings and socks.... very novak!

One thing... there is masses of knitwear. So much, that it's almost too common. Similar or even the exact same design is easy to fish out anywhere... in any of the shopping districts. 

However, like most fashion cities, you need to know where to go to find the unique stuff... and have a colourful eye to fish it out. 

Korea has definitely mastered the knit and its' unique styling. My mission... to explore it further, expose it and be completely absorbed in inspiration.

The Last Days...

I came across this post of photos of my studio in its last days. For what was only in prime existence a couple months ago, my hub of knitting mayhem is back to square one. I only hope to recreate what was composed in the streets of Footscray. Now only a vivid memory of a time and place where knitting inspiration and production thrived.

A new found love.... Korean Stationary!

 A new chapter begins with the discovery of beautiful design. 

I finally made the move, packed my bag and flew across the sea to the colourful world of 

South Korea. 

It is exactly if not more than what I aspired. 

 A city that never stops and there is always something new to observe and absorb.

A new found love.... the world of Korean Stationary.

From what was discovered in my beloved Melbourne, Korean Stationary collection TTable Office, which I have blogged about previously, is one that helped lead me to this new world. 

Still currently on the path to visit the actual studio, Ive taken a detour to their commission store in Hongdae, Seoul in an amazing complex SSMD filled with stationary to inspire.

 Beautifully designed and visually dreamlike, TTable mobiles are truly collectables.  

The knitting girl was the first in my possession, sparking a bond between my world and the world of stationary. I have now added Girl + Ball mobile (may I add, note the beautifully detailed knitted jumper) to my collection and is perfectly hanging in the middle of my room.

 Another great find, a little stationary shop in the streets of Sinchon, where I found this sweet letter set with a cutely illustrated masked cat resting on a ball of yarn. 

Another find to add to my largly growing pile of letter sets, which will be making their way to Melbournian letterboxes.... old school style.

Some very exciting news to share with you all....

Loré Loré is crossing the sea to discover a new world of colour, pattern and twine in South Korea!

With most of my life being packed up in boxes, my knitting needles and machines, along with my cones of yarn, will travel alongside me to continue creating in a new scenery.
So not to worry for I am not closing shop, but merely changing my surroundings for a hit of new and exciting inspiration.

It's a Pom Pom World...

It has been a Pom Pom frenzy at Lore Lore studio with yarn trimmings scattered all over my floor and beanies finding heads before evening leaving the studio...

So far approximately 30 beanies created, each of which are unique.

With an assortment of colours and patterns, my mega pom pom beanies have been a great hit and a pure enjoyment to create.

To accompany the collection, I have created a few quirky pom pom necklaces to add to the fun! Full of colour and mega pom pom-ness these are a whole lot of accessory to brighten your outfit.

Meet Me For A Knit Date.....

From what stemmed from trying to teach my cousin how to hand knit one of my bulky jersey yarns, turned out to be a following Saturday full of knitting mayhem.

I invited a group of knitting enthusiasts for a knitting workshop at my studio, to learn hand knitting and to have a play on the machines...

We met in the heart of Melbourne to shop for our yarns. Fortunately for us, both Morris & Sons and Lincraft were having sales. So with handfuls of yarns, we made out way back to the studio to begin creating...

The workshop quickly began and production was on the way. The studio was in complete manic. Yarn everywhere, pom poms being wounded and my name being summoned every 5 minutes.... unfortunately, there was only one of me with my two little hands.

Finishing in the late evening, 7 poms poms, 4 beanies and 3 scarves later, everyone was able to go home with a finished piece they knitted themselves. A successful creative day that took me 2 days to recover from...but I would do it all over again!

Magic happens in Manly with Beattie Lanser

A mesmerising few days I spent in Manly, Sydney. What was taken as a work trip, turned into a few days of magical inspiration soaked in the power of joy, passion and love.
The mission was to work at my first Sydney market, but instead I got a whole lot more than just the typical market and the few hard working days leading towards it. I was fortunate to be captivated by the colourful world of Beattie Lanser and romanced by the beautiful town of Manly where I stayed for my few days in Sydney.

The morning would begin by waking up in the cosiest of cosy beds to go for a crisp stroll down Manly beach. A stop at a local coffee station to enjoy a morning long black. A great start to the day to then kick off working aka playing, at the Beattie Lanser shop where all the magic is made.

Drama wasn't far from me, for I realised I forgot to pack the carriage for my knitting machine (a vital piece that makes knitting 'oh so much quicker' than hand knitting). But thanks to Express Post and my generous studio buddy....the carriage joined us just in time for a last minute play.

The Finders Keepers Market; colourfully decorated with floating babushka dolls, was nothing like I experienced compared to the cruisey momentum of Melbourne. A fabulous night and day, where the Sydney crowd embraced Loré Loré well. Miss B was there to the rescue me from the hustle and bustle of the night (she knows her stuff), but overall a very exhilarating and successful market.

The Saturday morning was a fresh start, taking the Manly Ferry through the crisp air into the CBD. Made my way to Redfern and then arriving at the beautiful warehouses of CarriageWorks for the Eveliegh Farmers Market, just in time for a nice stroll and a mouthful of fresh goodness! aka savory crepes...

Evenings were just as fun. Picture this... two lasses in colourful outfits, riding through the sunset streets of Manly on their way to dine at the Cartel.... mmm romantic! Great Italian food, served by two lovely beardy brothers... finishing touch, chocolate cake that melted in my mouth. Devine! If you every visit Manly, there's a good spot for you to treat your tastebuds.

With Kebabs, home cooked Laska, and dreamy flavoured Ice-cream; my tastebuds partied the few days away from my cooking and embraced all the flavours of Sydney's finest.

Sydney would'nt have been the same without experiencing through the eyes of my gracious host. The world of Beattie was one I did'nt want to leave... so I snapped up one of her infamous velvet dresses (which I've been dreaming about since Finders Keepers last October!) to remind me of all the magic that happened in Manly and Sydney.

Ercildoune...Where Inspiration Begins

Built in 1876, the 'Ercildoune' building is now the new home of my studio space. Currently owned by the Footscray Historical Society, this bluestone building was formally built as the first National Bank in Footscray. It may appear as a simple design from the exterior, but once inside, a world of classic Victorian interior to inspire, with high ceilings decored with ceiling roses, elegant staircase, Victorian styled fireplace (fortunately one located in my studio) and a beautiful rose garden where I can escape to with a cup of tea.

Accompanied with other talented artists in the building and a shared gallery space 'Effemmera' it is truly a space where I feel inspired.

Move in day.... I didnt realise the amount of things I had for my studio space...considering it all came from a previous studio half its size....

A Weekend @ St. Ali

It was a glorious weekend early March down at the Up & Comers Fashion Market. Weather was great and the atmosphere was typically relaxed down at St. Ali's in South Melbourne with the aroma of coffee in the air.

Here are some snap shots of the weekend for you to enjoy....

Knit Your Cord...

A range to be worn to make a visual statement, to be a piece of topic, to accessorize your outfit and to complete your look. Knit your cord is a hand knitted range of garments made using recycled selvage waste from jersey and cotton cord.

What makes this range so exclusive, is that each piece is individual due to the limited source of fabric and its colour. Sometimes I only have one ball of fabric in a colour to play around with, so I can't promise to make more than one of the same item. Each item has its own texture and weight.... and believe me, these aren't the easiest to knit by hand, but they sure do look awesome (if I may say so myself).

Vests can be worn however you want; upside down, inside out....whatever suits your look. Have the cord as a huge collar draping over your shoulders, or have it draping below as a hem.

Collars come with or without shoulder tassels, and can also be worn multiple ways. Wrap it around your neck, wear it off the shoulders, or let it hang forward like a huge neck piece. This is my personal favorite at the moment....has something something.

You may have seen the scarves before in an earlier post, when I first began to experiment with this range... these are an addition to the collection. Available in a range of lengths and textures, it is the perfect finishing touch to an outfit.

This collection can be found at the Rose St Markets Fitzroy, on the days I appear at the markets (dates will be later noted) and also through my Etsy Shop, which is due to re-open in the next couple of days.

Celebrating ethical, socially responsible and environmentally aware businesses and services, Fair@Square fair-trade+ethical festival is a free event which offers something for everyone who has an interest in being part of a more sustainable future.
Fair@Square provides a culturally rich and diverse offering of workshops, talks, market stalls, live music, fashion and art, appealing to young and old. The festival inspires, entertains and educates attendees, offering information and activities to encourage participants to live more sustainably and effect positive change in their own lifestyles and those of fair trade producers.
Due to the success of the inaugural event in 2009, this year Fair@Square will extend to two days of activities and programs designed to demonstrate how dialogue, creativity, music and trade can be used as vehicles to attain a sustainable and culturally diverse future.

Fair@Square fair-trade + ethical festival 2010 will be held in the heart of Melbourne at Federation Square on Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th of December 2010 from 11.00 am to 6.00pm.
We expect in excess of 50,000 visitors will participate in this vibrant and cultural festival.

Fair@Square fair-trade + ethical festival 2010 is supported by the Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand (FTAANZ).

Loré Loré is proud to be participating in this years Fair@Square festival as part of the 'Fair Fashion Show' sponsored by Savers.

Come along and enjoy the festivities at the Main Stage at Federation Square
